What is LGPE?
Large Group Performance Evaluation
The Large Group Performance Evaluation (LGPE) is an event sponsored by the Georgia Music Educators Association (GMEA) that evaluates ensembles with at least 17 members. Smaller groups can participate in the Solo and Ensemble event. Schools can take multiple groups to LGPE, and Fulton County encourages each school to send at least one ensemble from each category—band, chorus, and orchestra—for evaluation. Roswell High School is proud that all its curricular ensembles regularly participate in this event.
LGPE events are public, and performances are attended by students and parents from various schools. Each group is evaluated by a panel of three judges, with an additional judge for sight-reading. Judges, approved by GMEA, are selected from a panel, and a head judge oversees the event to ensure consistency.
Judges use score sheets based on National and State Music Standards, focusing on elements like breathing techniques, tone, and intonation. Although some differences exist between instrumental and vocal groups, the overarching standards remain consistent.
Selecting repertoire is a key challenge in the evaluation process. Directors must choose the appropriate level for each ensemble and select music from the GMEA-provided list. Choral ensembles perform in classes A through D, with A being the most advanced, while bands and orchestras have grades 1-6, with 6 being the most difficult.
Performances and sight-reading are rated as follows:
- Superior (1): Outstanding performance, among the best.
- Excellent (2): Unusually good performance, with minor defects.
- Good (3): Shows accomplishment and promise but lacks some qualities.
- Fair (4): Shows obvious weaknesses, generally uncertain.
- Poor (5): Shows a lack of preparedness and understanding.
Sight-reading involves both students and conductors being handed a piece of music to perform at their level. They have a set time to practice using classroom skills before performing for the sight-reading judge. Part of the evaluation includes their practice method.
Roswell High School's ensembles recently participated in LGPE, earning Superior Ratings in both performance and sight-reading. This achievement reflects the hard work and dedication that begins each August and builds throughout the year.
We hope this gives you insight into the rigorous process and accomplishments of our music program.
